Medication Use in Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

These medications can be bought without a prescription:

  • Tylenol for headache or pain

  • Benadryl for itchy rash and allergies

  • Metamucil, Milk of Magnesia or Citrucil for constipation

  • Pepto-Bismol or Kaopectate for diarrhea

  • Actifed or Sudafed for congestion or cold

  • Robitussin DM for cough

  • TUMS, Gaviscon, Zantac or Pepto-Bismol for heartburn

  • Preparation H for hemorrhoids

  • Chloroseptic spray or Cepachol lozenges for sore throat

  • Unisom for sleep problems
These medications require a prescription and are generally safe:
  • Amoxicillin, penicillin, erythromycin for infection

  • Phenergan suppository for vomiting

  • Robitussin AC for cough

  • Tylenol with codeine or Vicodin for severe pain
